Read the book now!

People don't understand that the movie is only the first 1/4 of the book. Within that quarter, it still misses so much of what made the book so thrilling. So I'm excited, if they stick to the book.

Listened to the audiobook multiple times.. and my wife has far surpassed me. It's just great, and especially a character, and the buddy movie that happens is a large part. Making it both similar and very different from the Martian. I think either way would work.. but I like giving my own imagination a go before having the look dictated for me no matter how good it is.

Read it, or better yet listen to it. It's a really great story and quite emotional in places. Rocky rocks!

If they don't like canon they should create something new... oh wait... they need brand power to sell their terrible storiies.

Yes, read the book. It’s fantastic! I’ve read it twice already and even knowing the plot didn’t diminishes the second reading so I don’t think it will spoil the movie (at least that was the case for me when watching the Martian) I can’t wait for this movie! Cheers

I'm looking forward to how they end up realising Rocky on screen more than anything!

Having read the book myself, I would wait based on what I know... The events throughout the story are something best left for visual exploration

Ryan Gosling? Again? I was interested until that point

While I am not a big Ryan Gosling fan, I am heartened with the talent they are bringing to bear on making the movie. And while the book was good, there were some slow parts that could have been trimmed out that I expect will be glossed over in the movie to its benefit. As for whether or not you should read the book before seeing the movie...the book is so good, I can't recommend waiting for the movie. As mentioned by others, the audio book is also excellent, one of the best audio adaptations I've ever heard. You will enjoy either experience.

I cried buckets reading the book, never done that before. Moments of great sorrow and joy are to be had. I'm not sure i would want to be out through that watching it in a movie theatre. The audiobook performance is first rate. I think if i had to choose how to experience the story for the first time, I'd go with the audiobook mentioned by others here.

I almost forgot this series, sad that it ended before it was done, felt really weird. Thanks for closure :)

The dust cover summary doesn’t begin to hint at the story. Enjoy the book. It’s a long ways to the movie release.

Thanks for highlighting this! I didn’t know the film was in the works. Definitely read the book first. I too am super stoked to hear Greig Fraser is involved. Kind of Gosling’d out but I suppose he is an excellent choice. Jake Gyllenhaal might have been a good choice.

They kind of screwed up the story already. I'm guessing dune 3 is going to be a train wreck. The source material from the second book on gets really long winded and never really captures the magic of dune. Book 2 sets up the god emperor. Like Paul has kids. One of them is kind of a little unlikeable brat. He grows up to be... oh that's the next book. He grows up to be a worm. He becomes emperor but he is still a little brat. No one likes him. Duncan clone tries to kill him. The end.

I'm betting that The Acolyte will make the case that the jedi were corrupt because of men.

Read the book. It doesn't hit as hard as the Martian but it's still pretty enjoyable.

Season 1 really left me underwhelmed, but I was sad to see it go before it had the chance to redeem itself

'Read' the audiobook. It's so well narrated! You will cry. Don't wait for the film.

I wish they'd cast a Dutch actress for Eva Stratt. The character is supposed to be Dutch after all and we have plenty of good actresses.

I try to read the book before seeing the movie. I've been doing it that way since Alien and the Shining. More recently with The Expanse. I enjoy seeing how writers change characters/dialogue... entire scenes and how my own thoughts interpret what I've read and imagined vs. whats on the screen.

I read the book as soon as I heard it was coming to the screen, so I wouldn’t be disappointed by necessary changes in the adaptation. . So glad I did! It was fabulous. I would highly recommend reading before seeing the film. Just sooner rather than later. Years ago, I finished the last pages of “Hunt for Red October” in the theater parking lot. I hated the film because so much that was fresh in my mind was changed or deleted. But with nearly two years to go, I will be able to enjoy this adaptation. I will even have time to re-read it. .

I suggest you hold off on this book and read 2 other books my Andy Weir, first James Moriarty Consulting Criminal and Artemis, both very good and completely different from the Martian and Hail Mary.

I bought the book when it came out, thought it was a little meh, mostly because of the backstory. But I later got the audiobook and I really enjoyed it more. I'm feeling like this movie is going to be better than the novel.

The book is great and will be difficult to lean down to movie length with all the recovering memory plot devices. I would read Artemis instead and let Hollywood have a blank slate with Project Hail Mary.

Read/listen to the book before! It is real great, funny and detailed. I heard the audio book and I definetly look forward to the film!!! The way how the story is, it would be sad if you miss the easter eggs they for sure will place for the readers...

It will be a difficult adaptation. So much of the "action" is Ryland's intellectualization of the situation and the mathematics he uses to deduce his role. I expect there will be heavy uses of flashbacks as his recollection returns.

I say go ahead and listen to the Audio book. Ray Porter does and amazing job with the narration. I have a feeling the movie will deviate slightly from the book, much like the Martian did. So having foreknowledge won’t be as harmful. And it will help avoid any spoilers that people may write like what I have already in your comments.

Project Hail Mary is above all, a book. So yes, read the book. I especially recommend the audio version.

I think Villeneuve has bought himself a lot of goodwill from the fanbase with Dune 1 & 2. (🤔Funny how honoring canon and making good movies will do that. Disney? Are you taking notes?) I'm willing to wait if it means "Dune Messiah" is a quality match to the first and second movies.
